Sony Tablet PCs For Mobile Warriors
The new set of Sony tablet PCs are targeted to be winners. The company announced them during April 2011. They mark the first Sony foray into this segment. The Apple iPad is clearly in target to smash, but we need to wait until later this year to see just how successful Sony will be. They will be available to consumers around September or October, maybe later.
Tablets are the most popular niche in personal computing today with sales rocketing up. Having created it, Apple leads the segment. An iPad 3 is expected to be released in 2012. Global tablet sales have climbed to 10 million units during 2010, up from a low base of only 90,000 units in 2009 according to figures from the Virginia-based Consumer Electronics Association. Other electronics producers are also hungry to challenge the iPad and push it off its perch.
For instance, one producer announced its tablet in the early months of 2011. The unit is about the same size as the iPad with a 10 inch sized display screen (same as iPad) and a thickness of 10.9 mm thick (8.8 mm for iPad 2). Other producers have completed launches in limited markets around the world. Still other are about to launch soon.
Researchers at Strategy Analytics predict tablet sales will climb to US$50 billion by around 2015. The devices have found a strong appeal among consumers who see them as bridging the gap between notebook PCs and smart phones. Tablets lift Wi-Fi connectivity and mobile computing to a higher level.
Despite its hefty price, the Apple iPad has sold almost 15 million units have been snapped off the shelves by eager consumers during 2010. That generated US$10 billion for Apple. Sony is eager to get its share of the market. During January 2011, the company confirmed it aims to achieve second position in the segment during 2012.
Prototypes of the Sony models have been provided to analysts for comment. Even though both Sony models use the Google Android 3.0 operating system for the personal computers, but the similarity stops there. The two models are quite different.
The S1 has a 9.4 inch LCD that includes cameras front and rear. The screen is bright and crisp and easy to look at. The unit is also light, not at all heavy to hold and carry around. The casing has a subtle wedge shape inspired by the way a person might hold a magazine with a single hand by folding the magazine in half around on itself lengthwise, to make it easier to hold. The result is that one side of the S1 is thicker than the other. It feels natural and not at all forced.
The latest Android 3.0 OS is designed for devices with big screens. Both the S1 and S2 have Wi-Fi connectivity and are WAN (3G and 4G) compatible. They also allow users to browse the Web, check emails, access games, books and videos on the go through the proprietary premium content service.
The soon-to-be-available Sony tablet PCs will be a welcome addition to the range of devices available to consumer hungry for mobile Wi-Fi connectivity. They could seriously challenge the dominance of Apple in the niche. But we must wait until later this year to see the final product. We live in hope.
